The Ministry of Culture organized an exhibition and programme in New Delhi to mark the biannual commemoration of the 125th birth anniversary of Bharat Kesari Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a prominent nation-builder. Addressing the gathering, Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted Dr Mookerjee’s significant contributions to India’s nation-building efforts and emphasized his outspoken opposition to appeasement politics—a term referring to policies that seek to placate or satisfy certain groups at the expense of national unity or justice.
Minister Shekhawat also noted that Dr Mookerjee paved the way for many workers like him, and announced that the Ministry of Culture plans to organize continuous programs over the next two years to honor Dr Mookerjee’s legacy. Adding to the tribute, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh praised Dr Mookerjee as a social reformer who vehemently opposed the special status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir, referring to the constitutional provision that granted the region certain autonomous powers. Dr Singh further linked Dr Mookerjee’s struggle to the historic abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which revoked this special status and fully integrated Jammu and Kashmir into India’s constitutional framework. During the event, both ministers also unveiled a commemorative postage stamp and coin dedicated to Bharat Kesari Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, honoring his enduring impact on the nation.
