Cut-off date for opting Unified Pension scheme extends till 30th Sep 2025

The Government of India has extended the cut-off date for opting into the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) to 30th September 2025, providing an additional three months beyond the original deadline. This extension comes in response to multiple representations and requests from stakeholders, including central government employees and retirees, who had sought more time to evaluate and exercise their options.

The Unified Pension Scheme was officially notified by the Ministry of Finance in January 2025, offering eligible Central Government employees the opportunity to migrate from the National Pension System (NPS) to the UPS. The National Pension System (NPS) is a contributory pension scheme where both employee and employer make defined contributions, while the Unified Pension Scheme aims to provide a more structured and secure post-retirement benefit framework, similar to the older Defined Benefit Pension model.

Initially, eligible individuals were given a window of three months, until 30th June 2025, to make this decision. However, recognizing the importance and long-term implications of this shift—especially for those nearing retirement or with specific financial planning needs—the government has now extended the deadline to 30th September 2025.

This extension is applicable to:

  • Currently employed eligible Central Government employees

  • Retirees under the Central Government

  • The legally wedded spouses of deceased retirees, who may now also exercise the option on behalf of the deceased

By granting additional time, the Ministry of Finance aims to ensure that all stakeholders can make an informed decision regarding their pension future, with due consideration of their personal circumstances and the benefits offered under the UPS.
