Desi Oon, an animated film by acclaimed filmmaker Suresh Eriyat, has brought unprecedented international recognition to the Indian animation industry. The film recently won the prestigious Jury Award for Best Commissioned Film at the Annecy International Animation Festival 2025 held in France. Annecy is widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious platform for animation, making this win a rare and monumental achievement for Indian creatives.
Further solidifying its place in global animation, Desi Oon was also crowned Best Film at the World Audio, Video and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, held in Mumbai. WAVES is India’s premier recognition platform for excellence in animation and design. It operates under the Create in India Challenge, a national initiative launched by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. This initiative aims to identify and elevate India's creative talent to a global stage by offering support, recognition, and visibility to emerging and established creators across animation, film, and design.
In addition to its Annecy triumph and WAVES victory, Desi Oon has been shortlisted at the Cannes Lions 2025 under the Film Craft Lions category. The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is among the world’s most esteemed advertising and creative communication festivals, and the Film Craft category specifically honours excellence in the technical and creative execution of visual storytelling.
The success of Desi Oon exemplifies how Indian animation is not only growing but also setting new benchmarks on the global map. This landmark moment showcases the potential of Indian storytelling and design excellence when given the right platform and recognition.
