India achieved its best-ever performance at the Asian Para-Badminton Championship 2025, held in Thailand from June 17 to 22, by securing an impressive total of 27 medals. This outstanding haul included 4 gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze medals, underlining the country's growing dominance in para-badminton—a form of the sport specifically adapted for athletes with physical impairments.
Among the star performers were India's Paralympic medallists, including Nitesh Kumar, a Paris Paralympics gold medallist, Thulasimathi Murugesan, who clinched silver in Paris, and Manisha Ramadass, a bronze winner at the same Games. Their continued success on the international stage is a testament to India’s robust para-athletics training programs and increasing focus on diversity and inclusion in sports.
India particularly dominated the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 category, where it achieved a historic clean sweep. The gold medal was claimed by the dynamic duo of Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan, who defeated fellow Indians Ruthick Raghupathi and Manasi Joshi in a clinical straight-sets victory. The bronze medal in the same category went to Chirag Baretha and Mandeep Kaur, rounding out India’s podium sweep.
SL3-SU5 Classification Explained: In para-badminton, classifications ensure fair competition based on the type and extent of physical impairment. SL3 (Standing/Lower Limb Impairment 3): Athletes with moderate impairment in one or both legs, affecting movement. SU5 (Standing/Upper Limb Impairment 5): Athletes with impairments in the upper limbs, but who can move freely on court.
This performance at the Asian Para-Badminton Championship 2025 not only sets a new benchmark for India but also boosts the nation’s confidence as it builds towards the Paris 2024 Paralympics. With consistent international achievements, India is rapidly emerging as a powerhouse in para-sports, driven by resilience, talent, and strategic support systems for its differently-abled athletes.
