Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday (December 28, 2025) said that India is set to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027, reflecting the country’s rapid economic expansion over the past decade.
Addressing the Yuva Business Maha Sammelan–2025, organised by the Vishwa Umiya Foundation at Vishwa Umiya Dham in Ahmedabad, the minister said India’s GDP has already reached $4.19 trillion and is moving steadily towards the $5 trillion economy milestone.
India’s Economic Rise and Digital Leadership
Highlighting India’s growing global footprint, Mr Shah noted that during 2024–25, nearly 50 per cent of the world’s digital financial transactions were conducted in India, underlining the country’s leadership in fintech and digital public infrastructure.
He said that when Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014, India was the 11th-largest economy globally, and within just 11 years, it has risen to the fourth position.
“By 2027, India will firmly secure its place as the world’s third-largest economy,” Mr Shah asserted.
Focus on Youth, Entrepreneurship and Startups
Addressing a gathering of nearly 15,000 young entrepreneurs, the Home Minister emphasised that information, guidance and networking are critical for business success in today’s era.
He announced the launch of a Vishwa Umiya Foundation mobile application, aimed at connecting youth with mentors, markets, career opportunities and investors, especially to support entrepreneurs from the Patidar community.
Mr Shah credited government initiatives such as:
Startup India
Stand Up India
MUDRA Yojana
Vocal for Local
Local for Global
for creating a strong ecosystem for entrepreneurship.
He noted that India has witnessed a dramatic startup surge—from 500 startups in 2014 to over 2.06 lakh startups today, generating 18 lakh permanent jobs and millions of temporary employment opportunities. India’s unicorn count has risen from just 4 to over 120 in the same period.
Atmanirbhar Bharat and Vision 2047
Looking ahead, Mr Shah said India must focus on two key pillars to become a global leader by 2047, the centenary year of Independence:
Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India)
Swadeshi (Promotion of Indian products)
“If Indian goods reach global markets and citizens prioritise Made-in-India products, no force can stop India from becoming the world’s number one nation,” he said.
Other Engagements in Gujarat
Earlier in the day, Mr Shah attended the IMA Netcon 2025, organised by the Indian Medical Association in Ahmedabad, where he spoke about India’s holistic approach to building health infrastructure.
He also inaugurated development projects worth ₹330 crore at Nava Vanjar in Gujarat, distributed certificates to rehabilitated residents, and attended the cultural programme Namotsav, based on the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
