Italy Qualifies for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 for the First Time

In a historic achievement for European cricket, Italy has qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time ever, joining the Netherlands as two of the latest entrants into the 2026 edition of the tournament, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. This milestone was secured during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, held at The Hague, Switzerland. In a crucial head-to-head fixture, the Netherlands comfortably defeated Italy by nine wickets, showcasing their dominance. Meanwhile, in a thrilling finish, Jersey pulled off a stunning upset over Scotland, clinching a one-wicket victory off the final ball of the match.

Despite both Italy and Jersey ending the group stage with five points each, it was the Italian team that advanced, thanks to a superior net run rate (NRR)—a statistical metric used to break ties in tournament standings by calculating the difference between a team's run rate and the run rate conceded to opponents. This advancement marks a significant leap for Italy, highlighting the rapid development of cricket in non-traditional regions of the sport.

With Italy and the Netherlands now confirmed, a total of 15 teams have secured their spots for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The qualification process is still ongoing, with the Asian regional qualifier expected to produce three more teams, and the Africa qualifier set to contribute two additional entrants. This structured and regionally inclusive qualification pathway underlines the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) commitment to globalizing the sport and bringing newer teams onto the world stage.
