Modi's two-day tour to Bihar, Odisha & Andhra Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day visit to Bihar, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh on June 20 and 21, 2025, marking a significant push for development, connectivity, and cultural celebration across the three states. The visit comes just a day after his return from a five-day official trip to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia.

Day 1: Bihar & Odisha

The Prime Minister began his tour in poll-bound Bihar, arriving in Siwan where he addressed a public meeting at Jasauli under Pachrukhi block around 12 noon. During the visit, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over ₹5,900 crore via video conferencing, aimed at strengthening urban development, railway infrastructure, housing, sewage treatment, and power systems.

Major Announcements and Inaugurations in Bihar:

  1. Railway Boost:

    • PM Modi inaugurated the Vaishali–Deoria railway line project, worth over ₹400 crore, and flagged off a new train service on this route.

    • He also flagged off a Vande Bharat Express connecting Patliputra Junction (Patna) to Gorakhpur via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah, enhancing high-speed rail connectivity across North Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

  2. Make in India Milestone:

    • A state-of-the-art locomotive, manufactured at the Marhowra Rail Factory in Saran district, was flagged off for export to the Republic of Guinea in West Africa. This marks the first export from this factory, aligning with India’s “Make in India – Make for the World” vision. These locomotives feature high-horsepower engines, advanced AC propulsion, and microprocessor-based control systems.

  3. Namami Gange Mission:

    • The Prime Minister inaugurated six Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) under the Namami Gange Project, worth over ₹1,800 crore. These STPs are designed to treat sewage from Patna and nearby areas before discharge into the Ganga River, bolstering the ongoing ‘Clean and Pure Ganga’ campaign.

  4. Urban Water and Sanitation Infrastructure:

    • He also laid the foundation stone for water supply, sanitation, and additional STP projects worth over ₹3,000 crore across various towns in Bihar, aiming to ensure clean and safe drinking water for residents.

  5. Power Sector Transformation:

    • PM Modi announced the installation of a 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bihar. These systems will be placed across 15 grid substations, including Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Bettiah, and Siwan. Each unit will have a capacity between 20–80 MWh, helping stabilize the grid and reduce dependency on costly electricity during peak demand. BESS refers to a system that stores electricity for use during high-demand periods, increasing grid reliability and efficiency.

  6. Housing for All – PMAY Urban:

    • The Prime Minister released the first instalment to over 53,600 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). He also handed over keys to several recipients as part of a ‘Grih Pravesh’ (house entry) ceremony for more than 6,600 newly constructed houses, reinforcing his government’s commitment to affordable housing.

There was tremendous public enthusiasm witnessed during the Prime Minister’s visit, particularly in Siwan, as residents welcomed the extensive development push and improved public service access.

In Odisha: State-Level Function and Vision for the Future

Later in the evening, PM Modi reached Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where he chaired a state-level function to mark the completion of one year of the Odisha state government. He also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹18,600 crore across diverse sectors including:

  • Drinking water, irrigation, and agricultural infrastructure

  • Health infrastructure, rural roads and bridges

  • Sections of national highways, and a new railway line

Key Odisha Announcements:

    • Launch of the ‘Baraputra Aitihya Gram Yojana’, aimed at transforming birthplaces of eminent Odias into living heritage centers with museums, libraries, and public spaces to celebrate local history and boost cultural tourism.

Day 2: Andhra Pradesh and International Yoga Day

On June 21, Prime Minister Modi will lead the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations from the beachfront of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, starting around 6:30 AM. He will participate in the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) session alongside nearly 5 lakh participants, symbolizing India’s leadership in the global wellness movement.

Yoga Day Highlights:

  • The event is part of Yoga Sangam, a nationwide initiative involving sessions at over 3.5 lakh locations across India.

  • This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”, emphasizes the link between personal well-being and planetary health, echoing India’s ancient philosophy of “Sarve Santu Niramaya” (May all be free from disease).

  • The celebrations also include youth-focused campaigns like Yoga Unplugged and Yoga with Family, conducted via platforms like MyGov and MyBharat to increase community engagement.

Since 2015, when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted India's proposal to designate June 21 as IDY, PM Modi has led the celebration from cities including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Mysuru, New York (UN HQ), and Srinagar. The event has evolved into a global health and mindfulness movement led by India.

This comprehensive two-day tour by Prime Minister Modi underscores a balanced vision of infrastructure expansion, inclusive growth, cultural pride, environmental responsibility, and citizen welfare across key regions of India.
