The Government of India has officially declared the Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh as an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ), a move aimed at strengthening biodiversity conservation while promoting responsible ecotourism.

Announcing the decision, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, said the notification reflects the government’s commitment to protecting ecologically fragile areas and developing sustainable tourism models that do not compromise natural habitats.

About Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary

Notified in 1997, the Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary is located about 40 kilometres from Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh. The sanctuary spans an area of approximately 11 square kilometres (1,084 hectares) and comprises two major wetlands — Parvati and Arga.

The wetland ecosystem serves as a crucial wintering ground for migratory birds, attracting over 40,000 waterfowl every year. Migratory species travel to the sanctuary from regions such as Central Asia and Tibet, making it one of the most important avian habitats in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Rich Avian and Wildlife Diversity

The sanctuary is home to more than 23 species of waterfowl, along with resident bird species such as the Purple Moorhen and Swamp Hen, which nest in the area. Importantly, the Sarus Crane, the state bird of Uttar Pradesh, finds an ideal habitat within the sanctuary’s wetlands.

Beyond birdlife, the sanctuary also supports diverse terrestrial fauna. Mammals such as jackals and nilgai are commonly sighted, highlighting the ecological richness of the region.

Objectives of Eco-Sensitive Zone Declaration

According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, declaring the sanctuary as an Eco-Sensitive Zone will help:

  • Protect fragile wetland ecosystems and surrounding landscapes

  • Regulate developmental activities in the eco-sensitive buffer area

  • Promote responsible and sustainable ecotourism

  • Strengthen conservation of migratory and resident bird species

  • Preserve biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods

The ESZ status places regulated controls on activities such as construction, industrial operations and land-use change in areas surrounding the sanctuary, ensuring long-term ecological stability.
