Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant five-day international tour beginning June 15, covering Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. This diplomatic outreach underscores India’s strategic intent to strengthen its global partnerships and deepen bilateral ties across Europe and North America.
First Stop – Cyprus: Strengthening Mediterranean and EU Ties
The tour will commence with an official visit to Cyprus on June 15, at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides. This marks a historic moment, as it will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades. During his stay in the capital city Nicosia, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Christodoulides, aimed at advancing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and culture.
In addition, the Prime Minister will address a gathering of business leaders in Limassol, reflecting India’s commitment to boosting economic engagement with Cyprus and the broader Mediterranean region. The visit is expected to reaffirm the shared commitment between India and Cyprus to enhance bilateral ties and also strengthen India's engagement with the European Union (EU).
Note: The Mediterranean region refers to the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, crucial for trade and regional diplomacy. The EU is a political and economic union of 27 European countries.
Second Leg – Canada: Participating in the G-7 Summit in Kananaskis
Following his engagements in Cyprus, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Kananaskis, Canada, on June 16. He will be attending the G-7 Summit, hosted this year at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This visit highlights India’s increasing role on the global stage, as it will be Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in the G-7 Summit.
The G-7 (Group of Seven) is a forum of the world’s seven largest advanced economies (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States), which meets annually to discuss major global issues. India, though not a permanent member, is often invited as a key outreach partner.
The G-7 Summit brings together leaders to discuss pressing global challenges, such as climate change, economic policy, and international security.
At the Summit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to exchange views with G-7 leaders, invited outreach countries, and Heads of International Organisations. Discussions will focus on crucial global issues, including:
Energy security – ensuring stable and sustainable energy supplies,
Technology and innovation – with special emphasis on the AI-energy nexus (how artificial intelligence can optimize energy systems),
and Quantum-related issues – referring to emerging technologies based on quantum mechanics that could revolutionize computing, encryption, and communication.
Several bilateral meetings are also planned on the sidelines of the Summit, further enhancing India’s diplomatic outreach.
This structured itinerary not only reflects India’s proactive foreign policy approach but also signals the growing global recognition of India’s leadership role in addressing 21st-century challenges. The visits to Cyprus, Canada, and later Croatia, emphasize the importance of regional collaboration, technological cooperation, and sustainable development in shaping a more interconnected world.
