Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (December 20, 2025) inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for National Highway projects valued at approximately ₹3,200 crore in West Bengal, marking a significant push to road infrastructure in the state.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the four-laning of the 66.7-kilometre Barajaguli–Krishnanagar stretch of National Highway-34 in Nadia district. In addition, he laid the foundation stone for the four-laning of the 17.6-kilometre Barasat–Barajaguli section of NH-34 in North 24 Parganas district.
These highway projects are expected to strengthen connectivity between Kolkata and Siliguri, a crucial corridor for passenger and freight movement. According to official estimates, the upgraded road network will cut travel time by nearly two hours, enabling smoother and faster vehicular movement. The improved infrastructure is also likely to stimulate regional economic activity and provide a boost to tourism and trade across the state.
Addressing a Parivartan Sankalpa Sabha in Taherpur, Nadia district, via telephone from Kolkata, the Prime Minister alleged that issues such as corruption, nepotism, and appeasement politics have hindered development in West Bengal. He emphasised the need for transparent governance to accelerate infrastructure-led growth.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister was unable to land at the event venue due to dense fog, which prevented his helicopter from touching down at the temporary helipad. As a result, he returned to Kolkata airport and addressed the gathering remotely.
