10th Ayurveda Day 2025 to Be Celebrated on 23rd September in Goa | Theme: Ayurveda for People & Planet

India is set to celebrate the 10th Ayurveda Day on 23rd September 2025 at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Goa, marking a historic milestone in the global recognition and promotion of traditional Indian medicine.

This is the first time Ayurveda Day will be observed on a fixed calendar date, departing from the earlier practice of aligning the celebration with Dhanvantari Jayanti (Dhanteras). The decision, notified by the Government of India in March 2025, gives Ayurveda a global calendar identity, ensuring wider international participation.

A Global Stage for Ayurveda

Union Minister of Ayush and Health & Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted that Ayurveda is reaching new heights on the global stage. He noted that Goa, with its international outlook and wellness heritage, is the perfect venue for this year’s event.

The Minister emphasized:

“We are not just celebrating a tradition; we are taking Ayurveda to the world as a sustainable solution for modern healthcare challenges.”

The theme for 2025 — “Ayurveda for People & Planet” — underscores Ayurveda’s holistic philosophy. Ayurveda, literally meaning the “science of life”, is rooted in the principle of harmony between the individual (people) and the environment (planet). This year’s theme places emphasis not only on personal health but also on ecological sustainability and the role of Ayurveda in addressing climate-linked health issues.

Ayurveda Day: From 2016 to a Global Movement

  • First observed in 2016, Ayurveda Day was initially celebrated on Dhanvantari Jayanti. Over time, it has evolved into a global movement.

  • According to Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Ayurveda is now recognized as a formal system of traditional medicine in 24 countries, while over 100 nations import Ayurveda products.

  • In 2024 alone, activities marking Ayurveda Day were held in 150+ countries, coordinated through Indian Missions abroad, universities, wellness organizations, and diaspora networks.

The Ministry of Ayush has planned similar large-scale celebrations in 2025, including awareness campaigns, youth engagement programmes, free wellness consultations, and global outreach initiatives.

Milestones from Ayurveda Day 2024

The 9th Ayurveda Day (2024) was a turning point in India’s healthcare journey:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase II of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi.

  • Four Centres of Excellence in Ayurveda were launched.

  • The nationwide campaign “Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan” was introduced.

  • Health-related projects worth ₹12,850 crore were announced.

These milestones laid the foundation for making Ayurveda a central pillar of India’s holistic health diplomacy.

Why Ayurveda Matters in Contemporary Healthcare

Ayurveda is more than a system of treatment — it is a life science that emphasizes preventive healthcare, lifestyle discipline, and harmony with nature. According to India’s first all-India NSSO survey, Ayurveda is the most commonly used system of treatment in both rural and urban India.

In today’s world, Ayurveda offers solutions to modern challenges such as:

  • Lifestyle disorders (obesity, diabetes, hypertension).

  • Climate-related diseases linked to environmental degradation.

  • Stress and mental health issues stemming from fast-paced urban living.

By aligning traditional wisdom with evidence-based modern healthcare, Ayurveda is being positioned as a planet-friendly, integrative health system.

Ayurveda for People & Planet: A Universal Vision

The 2025 theme reflects India’s resolve to harness Ayurveda for:

  • Human well-being — promoting health, longevity, and mental peace.

  • Environmental sustainability — minimizing ecological harm, encouraging natural resource conservation, and advocating for eco-conscious lifestyles.

As Minister Jadhav noted, this year’s celebration is not just ceremonial. It is a step toward mainstreaming Ayurveda as a global healthcare solution, aligning with India’s larger cultural diplomacy and its leadership in sustainable, holistic health systems.
