In a major step towards strengthening India’s position as a global automotive powerhouse, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has launched the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047). This strategic roadmap is aligned with the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’, which envisions India as a fully developed nation by the centenary of its independence.
Building on the success of earlier Automotive Mission Plans, which contributed significantly to the expansion and modernization of India’s automotive industry through stakeholder collaboration, AMP 2047 aims to drive innovation, promote sustainability, and expand India’s global trade footprint in the automotive sector.
More than a vision statement, AMP 2047 lays out a concrete, time-bound plan, with clearly defined milestones set for 2030, 2037, and 2047. It aspires to create an ecosystem that not only keeps pace with global technological shifts but leads them.
Who is contributing to the mission and how is the framework being shaped?
The plan is being shaped through an inclusive, industry-led effort, beginning with the inaugural meeting of AMP 2047’s Sub-Committees. These committees are tasked with outlining objectives, developing strategy, and coordinating with a broad set of stakeholders across government, industry, academia, and civil society.
The Sub-Committees bring together representatives from various ministries—including those handling power, road transport, commerce, petroleum, environment, and industrial promotion—alongside major industry associations such as:
SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers)
ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India)
CII (Confederation of Indian Industry)
FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry)
Also participating are leading academic institutions, think tanks, and testing agencies, reflecting the broad and collaborative scope of the initiative.
SIAM and ACMA represent the interests of vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers respectively, helping shape policy, set industry standards, and foster innovation.
During the initial discussions, it was emphasized that AMP 2047 should not be limited to specific technologies or companies but should serve as a strategic tool for boosting India’s global standing in automotive innovation, production, and exports.
What are the key focus areas of AMP 2047?
AMP 2047 is being designed to address critical areas such as:
Technological advancement, including the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen mobility
Charging and fueling infrastructure for cleaner transport
Sustainable manufacturing and low-emission mobility
Export promotion and global market integration
Innovation ecosystems involving startups, R&D institutions, and traditional manufacturers
The plan brings together Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), auto component suppliers, policy makers, researchers, and end users, creating a unified framework for sectoral development.
Seven expert-driven Sub-Committees have been constituted to focus on different thematic areas. Their work will culminate in presentations to an Apex Committee, which will guide final decisions and align the recommendations with national development goals.
How will this roadmap support a self-reliant and future-ready automotive ecosystem?
The Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to building a self-reliant, resilient, and future-ready automotive sector. The aim is to ensure India is not only meeting domestic demand but also becoming a global hub for automotive design, manufacturing, and innovation.
AMP 2047 serves as a pivotal tool to navigate global disruptions in mobility, supply chains, and energy, and to harness them as opportunities. With the support of industry stakeholders and continuous inter-agency collaboration, the plan is expected to lay the foundation for a cleaner, smarter, and more competitive Indian automotive industry.
As the work of the Sub-Committees progresses, insights and proposals will be synthesized into a comprehensive national strategy—turning a shared vision into actionable steps toward Viksit Bharat @2047.
