Former Doug Bracewell, one of New Zealand’s experienced seam-bowling all-rounders, has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a 12-year international career and an 18-year professional journey in the sport.

The 35-year-old represented New Zealand national cricket team across all three formats between 2011 and 2023, featuring in:

  • 28 Test matches

  • 21 One Day Internationals (ODIs)

  • 20 T20 Internationals

Across his international career, Bracewell claimed 120 wickets and scored 915 runs, making valuable contributions with both bat and ball.

Career Highlights

One of the most memorable moments of Bracewell’s international career came during New Zealand’s historic Test victory over Australia in Hobart in 2011. Playing just his third Test, Bracewell delivered a player-of-the-match performance, taking six wickets in Australia’s second innings to help the Black Caps secure a dramatic seven-run win—their last Test victory over Australia to date.

That performance remains a defining highlight of his career and is widely regarded as one of New Zealand cricket’s most iconic Test moments of the modern era.

Domestic and Early Career

Bracewell made his first-class debut for Central Districts in late 2008, at the age of 18, after representing New Zealand at the Under-19 level. He went on to enjoy a long domestic career with Central Districts, alongside his international commitments.

Cricket runs deep in Bracewell’s family. His father Brendon Bracewell and uncle John Bracewell both played Test cricket for New Zealand, while his cousin Michael Bracewell continues to be part of the Black Caps setup.

Injury and Retirement Decision

A long-standing rib injury, which ruled him out of the current domestic season, played a significant role in his decision to retire from all forms of international cricket.

Reflecting on his career, Bracewell said in a statement released by Central Districts:

“It’s been a proud part of my life, and something I aspired to as a young cricketer. I will always be grateful for the opportunities I’ve had through cricket—especially the chance to play for my country and for Central Districts.”

He also expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, and management who supported him throughout his journey:

“It’s a privilege to play first-class and international cricket, and I’m grateful to have played and enjoyed the game for as long as I have.”

Legacy

Doug Bracewell retires as a cricketer remembered for his match-winning spells, resilience, and commitment, particularly in the longest format of the game. His contributions at both domestic and international levels leave behind a legacy of dedication and professionalism within New Zealand cricket.
