FSSAI Releases Definitive List of Ayurveda Aahara: India’s Traditional Nutrition Gets Regulatory Recognition

In a significant move to integrate India’s rich traditional food wisdom into the modern regulatory framework, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, has officially released a definitive list of Ayurvedic food preparations under the category of “Ayurveda Aahara.” This initiative is rooted in the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022, which formally recognize food items that draw their origin from classical Ayurvedic texts.

This carefully curated list has been issued under Note (1) of Schedule B of the regulations and is based entirely on authentic Ayurvedic texts listed in Schedule A. The objective is to ensure that all food products under the Ayurveda Aahara category maintain their traditional integrity while complying with safety standards. By doing so, the FSSAI offers unprecedented regulatory clarity and confidence to both consumers and Food Business Operators (FBOs).

To further support innovation within traditional boundaries, FBOs can now propose the inclusion of additional Category A food products by submitting references from authoritative Ayurvedic scriptures listed in Schedule A. Any updates to the list will be formally notified by the FSSAI, maintaining transparency and authenticity.

Ayurveda Aahara is not merely a product label — it represents India’s time-honoured food culture, built on the principles of balance, seasonal alignment, and therapeutic nutrition. These foods are developed in accordance with Ayurveda, one of the oldest holistic systems of health and wellness, using natural ingredients and medicinal herbs known to support digestion, enhance immunity, and promote overall well-being.

At the inauguration of World Food India in November 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the timeless value of India's food traditions. He remarked,

“India's sustainable food culture is the result of a journey of thousands of years. Our ancestors had linked Ayurveda with the food style of the common people. Just as Yoga Day took Yoga to every corner of the world, similarly now Millets will also reach every corner of the world.”

The Prime Minister’s message reflects a broader vision—bringing Ayurveda-based nutrition to a global platform and promoting preventive health through sustainable and traditional dietary practices. In today’s fast-paced world, adopting Ayurveda Aahara offers a meaningful path toward balanced living and preventive healthcare.

A major milestone in this journey is the development of the Ayush Aahara Compendium. Created under the guidance of the Ministry of Ayush and the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), this compendium decodes and scientifically validates traditional food formulations, providing a trusted reference for food manufacturers and ensuring that consumers have access to safe, authentic, and time-tested Ayurvedic dietary solutions.

As consumer interest in natural wellness and functional foods continues to grow, Ayurveda Aahara is emerging as a trusted nutritional choice that harmonises India’s ancient wisdom with modern lifestyles. The release of this definitive list, therefore, marks a pivotal moment—enhancing regulatory clarity, empowering industry stakeholders, and boosting public trust in Ayurveda-based nutrition.

By embracing Ayurveda Aahara, citizens are not only reconnecting with their cultural roots but also making a proactive choice for long-term health, sustainability, and well-being—one that aligns deeply with both tradition and science.
