India Creates History with Double Team Titles at U23 Asian Wrestling Championships 2025

India delivered a historic and dominant performance at the Under-23 Asian Wrestling Championships 2025, held in Vung Tau, Vietnam, by clinching both men’s and women’s team titles—a first for the country at this prestigious continental event. The young Indian wrestlers showcased extraordinary talent and grit, signaling a bright future for the nation in global wrestling circuits.

On the final day of the tournament, Indian men’s freestyle wrestlers added to the country’s glory by winning six medals, including five gold medals. The gold medallists—Nikhil, Sujeet, Jaideep, Chander Mohan, and Sachin—delivered powerful performances to push India to the top of the men’s freestyle team rankings. Their efforts contributed significantly to India claiming the overall men’s team championship title in freestyle wrestling.

The Indian women’s wrestling team matched the men in brilliance by achieving a clean sweep of medals in all 10 categories, thereby securing the women’s freestyle team title. Their medal tally included four gold medals, five silver medals, and one bronze, underlining India's rising stature in women’s wrestling on the Asian stage.

Gold medals in women’s freestyle were won by:

  • Priyanshi Prajapat in the 50kg category

  • Reena in the 55kg category

  • Shrishti in the 68kg category

  • Priya in the 76kg category

Additionally, five Indian women wrestlers reached the finals and secured silver medals, demonstrating the depth of talent across weight divisions.

U23 Asian Wrestling Championships is an annual continental event featuring top under-23 wrestlers from across Asia, providing a platform to groom future Olympians and world champions.Freestyle wrestling, unlike Greco-Roman, allows athletes to use both upper and lower bodies for attacks and defenses, making it more dynamic and inclusive of varied techniques.

India’s double team triumph at the Under-23 level signals a strong bench strength and the success of grassroots wrestling programs, especially among women. This breakthrough performance has not only etched India’s name in the championship’s history but also instilled confidence as the country prepares for future international wrestling events, including the World Championships and the Olympics.
