International Chess Day, observed each year on July 20, is a global celebration that brings together the chess community to honor one of the world’s most intellectual and culturally rich games. The date marks the founding of FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs or International Chess Federation) in 1924, the organization that governs international chess competition and promotes the game worldwide.
The idea for dedicating a day to chess was first proposed by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and it became an official observance when FIDE began celebrating it in 1966. The importance of this day was further reinforced when the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in 2019, recognizing July 20 as International Chess Day. This resolution, introduced by Armenia and co-sponsored by 52 countries, emphasizes chess as more than a game—it is a universal tool for learning, inclusion, and diplomacy.
According to the UN resolution, chess is described as an ancient, intellectual, and cultural game that blends sport, scientific thinking, and artistic expression. It promotes fairness, inclusion, and mutual respect, contributing to tolerance and understanding across nations and communities. Importantly, chess is affordable and accessible, capable of being played anywhere and by anyone—regardless of language, age, gender, physical ability, or social background. These qualities make it a powerful tool for education, gender equality, and empowerment, especially for women and girls.
In line with this spirit, FIDE announces a theme for International Chess Day each year to spread its message further. The theme for 2025 is "Every Move Counts," a phrase meant to remind players and enthusiasts alike that, just as in chess, every decision in life shapes our journey. The theme ties directly into FIDE’s 2025 initiative: the ‘Year of Social Chess’, which aims to use chess as a means to foster inclusion, support mental well-being, and provide educational empowerment through community engagement.
Armenia’s prominent role in advocating for chess globally is particularly fitting. The country has integrated chess as a mandatory academic subject in schools and is recognized for having one of the highest numbers of elite chess players per capita. When presenting the resolution, Mher Margaryan, Armenia’s representative to the UN, stated:
“One of the most important and enduring lessons that chess can offer is teaching respect.”
Each year, chess is played and loved by millions, but on July 20, the entire world pauses to celebrate it. From global icons like Viswanathan Anand to rising young talents, chess players from India and around the world are making their mark, turning the chessboard into a stage of global inspiration.
So, whether you're a grandmaster or a beginner, International Chess Day is a moment to reflect on the strategic elegance of chess, its ability to connect people across boundaries, and its growing role in education and society. After all, in chess as in life, every move counts.
