In a significant national announcement, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Dr Muhammad Yunus, confirmed that the country's next national elections will be held on any day in the first half of April 2026.
Dr. Yunus made the announcement during a televised address to the nation on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, outlining the government's commitment to ensuring a transparent and democratic electoral process.
During his address, Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that the Election Commission of Bangladesh will share a comprehensive roadmap for the elections at an appropriate time. He emphasized that the interim government is currently taking all necessary steps to create a conducive environment for free and fair elections throughout the country.
In response to recent rumors, Dr. Yunus firmly rejected claims that Bangladesh has provided a corridor for Rakhine State, calling it a “complete lie”. He clarified that these allegations are part of false propaganda being circulated to mislead the public.
He added that the confusion likely stems from a diplomatic proposal: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during his visit to Dhaka in March 2023, had proposed a relief channel to help manage the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State. Dr. Yunus clarified that this initiative was a UN humanitarian effort and not a geopolitical corridor arrangement.
