PM Modi's Argentina Visit 2025: A Historic Diplomatic Leap After 57 Years

In a landmark diplomatic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Argentina on July 4–5, 2025, at the invitation of President Javier Milei. While Prime Minister Modi had previously travelled to Argentina in 2018 for the G20 Summit—a global forum for economic cooperation—this marks his first official bilateral visit to the South American nation, and notably, the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years, underscoring its historic significance.

Over the years, India and Argentina have developed cohesive and multifaceted relations, spanning key sectors and rooted in decades of mutual respect and collaboration. Their ties were elevated to the level of a Strategic Partnership in 2019, a status that denotes deep, long-term cooperation across multiple domains, and the two nations proudly celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024.

The cultural affinity between the two countries also runs deep. Yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian philosophy enjoy considerable popularity in Argentina, strengthening the people-to-people connection—a term often used in diplomacy to describe informal, cultural, and societal links that go beyond official relations.

As per the visit's itinerary, Prime Minister Modi will pay homage to General José de San Martín, Argentina’s revered freedom fighter and national hero, by offering floral tributes at his statue. He will be accorded a ceremonial welcome upon arrival, followed by delegation-level talks, and a lunch hosted by President Milei, reflecting the warmth and importance of this engagement.

During the bilateral discussions, the two leaders are expected to review existing areas of cooperation and chart out new avenues for strengthening the partnership. The focus will span a wide range of key sectors, including defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade and investment, as well as furthering cultural and educational exchanges. These talks come at a crucial time as Argentina is undergoing major economic reforms, which are seen as somewhat parallel to the economic liberalization India undertook in the 1990s—reforms that opened the country to global markets and investment.

This visit also holds the promise of enhanced collaboration in emerging and strategic areas. India’s achievements in defence manufacturing, space technology, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)—a term that refers to government-supported systems like digital identity, payments, and data-sharing platforms—offer exciting opportunities for joint initiatives.

Additionally, India’s expertise in Telemedicine and digital healthcare delivery could significantly support Argentina in improving healthcare access, particularly in remote regions. These shared interests and complementary strengths present a unique opportunity for a mutually beneficial partnership.
