Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jammu and Kashmir today and laid the foundation stone, inaugurated, and dedicated multiple development projects worth over ₹46,000 crore to the nation. These projects are poised to significantly enhance the region’s connectivity, infrastructure, and socio-economic landscape.

Among the most significant inaugurations was the world’s highest railway arch bridge – the Chenab Bridge, and India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge – the Anji Khad Bridge. Additionally, the Prime Minister dedicated the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) to the nation, a major railway development constructed at a cost of around ₹44,000 crore.

Addressing a large gathering at Katra, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the state-of-the-art Chenab Bridge will drastically improve connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. He expressed pride in the fact that “from Kashmir to Kanyakumari,” the entire country is now linked by the railway network. Mr. Modi described the USBRL as a symbol of a new, empowered Jammu and Kashmir, and a resounding proclamation of India’s growing strength.

He also stated that the Chenab and Anji Bridges will act as gateways to prosperity for the region. Drawing a compelling comparison, Mr. Modi noted that while tourists travel to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower, the Chenab Bridge, which surpasses it in height, is set to become a tourist attraction of international interest.

Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, the Prime Minister reiterated that India will not bow to terrorism. He remarked that Pakistan, frustrated by India’s progress, has targeted innocent civilians in areas like Jammu and Poonch. Recognizing the challenges faced by over 2,000 families affected by cross-border shelling, Mr. Modi highlighted previous government efforts to provide financial aid for home repairs and relief for those impacted.

Further strengthening this support, he announced enhanced compensation:

  • ₹2 lakh for severely damaged homes

  • ₹1 lakh for partially damaged homes

This aid is in addition to the assistance already provided earlier.

In his address, the Prime Minister made a special appeal to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to actively engage in India’s manufacturing revolution. Citing Operation Sindoor as an example, he said it showcased the might of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). Mr. Modi emphasized that the world is now recognizing India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem.

Mr. Modi proudly stated that over the last 11 years, more than 25 crore people have successfully escaped poverty, joining the neo-middle class. He reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening both the poor and the emerging middle class, ensuring their economic and social security through key reforms

During the visit, the Prime Minister also flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains:

  • One from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar

  • Another from Srinagar to Katra

Another key highlight was the laying of the foundation stone of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra, an initiative worth over ₹350 crore. This will be the first medical college in Reasi district, greatly contributing to the healthcare infrastructure of the region.

In a major push for last-mile connectivity, particularly in border areas, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated several road projects, further improving accessibility and regional development.
