Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a significant multi-nation diplomatic tour yesterday, covering Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. The visit is aimed at strengthening India’s ties with the Global South — a term that broadly refers to countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania that share common development priorities and historical experiences, including colonialism and economic disparity. The visit focuses on deepening cooperation in trade, investment, development, defence, energy, and people-to-people ties, while reinforcing India’s commitment to inclusive global partnerships.
Ghana (July 2–3, 2025)
PM Modi began his tour with a two-day visit to Ghana, the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country. This visit also marks the first PM-level visit from India to Ghana in over three decades. Upon arrival, he was accorded a ceremonial welcome, including a guard of honour and 21-gun salute, symbolizing the warmth of Ghana-India ties.
During his stay, PM Modi held bilateral talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House in Accra to review and expand the strong bilateral partnership, especially in sectors like energy, defence, investment, healthcare, traditional medicine, and development cooperation. They agreed to elevate the relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, highlighting mutual goals in security, infrastructure, digital technology, and skills development.
In a powerful symbolic gesture, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Parliament of Ghana, underlining the shared democratic ethos of the two nations. He emphasized India's role as a co-traveller in Ghana’s development journey.
Notably, PM Modi was conferred Ghana’s highest national honour — the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — by President Mahama during a State Banquet. This was in recognition of his distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership, particularly his contribution to South-South cooperation and solidarity.
Four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, including on Ayurveda and traditional medicine, cultural exchange, quality standards, and the establishment of a Joint Commission mechanism. They also discussed defence collaboration, guided by the principle of “Security through Solidarity”, focusing on maritime security, training of armed forces, cyber defence, and defence supply chains.
Trinidad & Tobago (July 3–4, 2025)
In the second leg, PM Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. This marks his first visit to T&T as Prime Minister and the first bilateral PM-level visit since 1999.
India and T&T share deep-rooted historical, cultural, and people-to-people connections, particularly due to the large Indian-origin diaspora in the Caribbean. PM Modi will hold meetings with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, aimed at rejuvenating ancestral bonds and expanding cooperation in areas like culture, trade, capacity building, and climate resilience.
He is also expected to address a Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, signifying the importance India places on democratic exchanges and parliamentary diplomacy. The visit will provide renewed momentum to India’s engagement with CARICOM — the Caribbean Community, a regional integration body of 15 Caribbean nations.
Argentina (July 4–5, 2025)
The third stop will be Argentina, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. At the invitation of President Javier Milei, PM Modi will engage in detailed discussions on expanding the India-Argentina Strategic Partnership.
Argentina is seen as a key economic partner in Latin America and an active collaborator in the G20. The leaders will focus on cooperation in defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade, investment, technology, and people-to-people linkages.
A major area of convergence will be critical minerals — essential raw materials like lithium and rare earths, crucial for clean energy, EV batteries, and high-tech industries. The visit is expected to boost bilateral collaboration in strategic and resource-driven sectors.
Brazil (July 5–8, 2025)
Prime Minister Modi will then travel to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro from July 6–7, followed by a bilateral State Visit to Brasilia. This will be PM Modi’s fourth visit to Brazil, and the first Indian Prime Ministerial State Visit in nearly six decades.
As a founding member of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), India remains committed to its mission of promoting multilateralism, reforming global governance, and creating a balanced, multipolar world order. The Summit will address pressing issues like peace and security, global health, economic recovery, climate action, responsible AI use, and financial cooperation.
On the sidelines, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders. In Brasilia, he will engage in strategic-level discussions with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, aimed at broadening ties in trade, defence, agriculture, energy, technology, space, and people-to-people relations.

Namibia (July 9, 2025)
The final leg of the tour will take PM Modi to Namibia, at the invitation of President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. This will be his first visit to Namibia, and only the third-ever PM-level visit from India.
India and Namibia share a common anti-colonial legacy, and PM Modi described Namibia as a trusted partner in the Global South. He will hold bilateral talks with President Nandi-Ndaitwah, focusing on a new roadmap for collaboration, especially in areas like education, technology, trade, health, and capacity building.
He will also pay tribute to Dr. Sam Nujoma, the Founding Father and first President of Namibia. Additionally, PM Modi is expected to address a Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament, further cementing parliamentary ties and development cooperation.
Vision for the Global South
Summing up, PM Modi expressed confidence that this comprehensive diplomatic tour will reinforce India’s bonds of friendship across the Global South, enhance bilateral ties across continents, and deepen engagements through multilateral platforms such as BRICS, African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM.
This strategic outreach highlights India’s ambition to act as a bridge between the developed and developing world, and to advance a shared agenda of inclusive growth, technological partnership, development cooperation, and global equity.
