Amid a rapidly escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump departed the G7 summit in Canada ahead of schedule, returning to Washington just hours after global leaders issued a joint appeal for de-escalation in West Asia. The summit, which includes leaders from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, had culminated in a collective call for an immediate resolution to the intensifying hostilities and a broader push for regional stability.
According to French President Emmanuel Macron, President Trump informed fellow G7 leaders that ceasefire discussions between Israel and Iran were already underway. However, Trump later contradicted this on social media, stating that his early departure had “nothing to do with a ceasefire” and was due to "something much bigger than that," without providing further clarification. His cryptic comment has added to speculation over possible U.S. military or diplomatic actions in response to the growing crisis.
Just prior to his exit, President Trump had also issued a strong warning to U.S. citizens in Iran, urging them to evacuate Tehran, amid fears that the conflict could widen unless Iran withdraws from what the U.S. has termed "regional provocations"—a reference to Iran's involvement in proxy conflicts and its support for non-state actors across the Middle East.
The current round of hostilities began on Friday, when Israeli forces launched missile strikes deep into Iranian territory. In a swift response, Iran retaliated by targeting multiple cities in Israel, escalating the confrontation into a full-fledged cross-border exchange. Though both nations have reported military and civilian casualties, detailed figures remain unavailable as the situation continues to evolve.
The G7’s unified statement emphasized the urgency of diplomacy, warning that further escalation could destabilize not just West Asia (Middle East) but also have global implications. With tensions at their highest point in years, the international community remains on alert, monitoring the developments closely and preparing for potential fallout from the conflict.
