Priyanka Chopra Opens Up on Leaving Bollywood: “I Felt Cornered” — How Hollywood Gave Her Career a Second Life

Priyanka Chopra Jonas has once again spoken candidly about one of the boldest decisions of her life — leaving a successful career in Hindi cinema to restart from scratch in Hollywood. In recent interviews and podcast appearances, the global star revealed how she felt “cornered” in Bollywood and why moving to the United States became essential for her emotional and professional survival.

Here’s everything she said — and how that move reshaped her global career.

“I Felt Cornered in Bollywood”

During a conversation on Jay Shetty’s podcast, Priyanka reflected on the pressures of the Hindi film industry. She described it as political, competitive, and fleeting.

“Surviving in the movie industry is tough for everyone. It is political, networky, it is about the moment, it is fleeting… I did feel like I was in a place where I was cornered, work was limited, and in order to survive emotionally, mentally, physically, I just needed to move.”

By 2013, Priyanka was already a top-tier actor in Bollywood, with critically acclaimed performances and major commercial successes. Financially secure and professionally stable, she had built a powerful foundation. Yet internally, she felt her growth had stalled.

She admitted that if she had continued working only in Hindi films, her career might not have had the longevity she desired.

Restarting at 30: “It Was Terrifying”

In an interview with Variety, Priyanka spoke about the risks of beginning again in her 30s.

“To restart your career in your 30s is terrifying. I was secure. I was doing well financially. I was established. And I chose to blow it up.”

Moving to Los Angeles meant stepping into an industry with no clear roadmap for her. There was no established path for Indian actors in Hollywood at the time.

She initially pursued music, signing with Desi Hits in partnership with Interscope Records. Though the venture did not become the breakthrough she hoped for, it opened critical doors.

The Music Era That Changed Everything

Before her acting breakthrough in the West, Priyanka entered the global music scene with singles like:

  • In My City (2012)

  • Exotic featuring Pitbull

  • I Can’t Make You Love Me

She collaborated with international artists such as Pitbull, will.i.am, and The Chainsmokers — an experience she described as transformative.

“I was feeling like I was drowning, and I was suddenly pulled out, and I could breathe.”

This “pop star era,” as she calls it, became her bridge into Hollywood.

The Breakthrough: Quantico and Beyond

Her major turning point came with the ABC thriller series Quantico in 2015. The show ran for three seasons and made her the first South Asian woman to headline an American network drama series.

After Quantico, Priyanka steadily built her Hollywood résumé:

  • Baywatch

  • The Matrix Resurrections

  • The White Tiger (Oscar-nominated)

  • Citadel

Today, she is one of the few Indian actors who seamlessly straddles both Bollywood and Hollywood.

“I Never Wanted to Leave Bollywood”

Interestingly, Priyanka recently clarified that leaving Bollywood was never her original plan.

“I don’t think I ever wanted to leave Bollywood… I felt limited for many reasons when I was working in Hindi films. I was kind of pushed into wanting to look for opportunities that would be exciting to me as an artiste.”

She emphasized that she does not see it as choosing one industry over the other. Instead, she sees herself as someone who works across cultures.

“I feel like I straddle both worlds… I would hate to have to choose between the two.”

Upcoming Projects: A Busy Global Slate

Priyanka Chopra’s lineup reflects her global positioning.

From Bollywood Star to Global Powerhouse

Priyanka Chopra’s story is not simply about moving industries — it is about reinvention.

She left stability for uncertainty. She traded stardom for anonymity. She rebuilt her career from the ground up.

Today, she is in a position where she can choose her projects — something she says she values deeply.

“I am in a position now where I get to pick the things that I want to make… I understand the privilege of that very much.”

Why Priyanka Chopra’s Journey Matters

Her transition marked a turning point for South Asian representation in mainstream Western entertainment. When she moved, there were few global crossovers from Indian cinema to Hollywood at the scale she envisioned.

Now, that path is wider.

Her journey demonstrates:

  • Career longevity requires risk

  • Reinvention can be strategic

  • Global markets are no longer isolated
