World Refugee Day, observed globally on June 20, is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour and recognize the strength, resilience, and courage of millions of people who have been forced to flee their home countries due to conflict, violence, or persecution. It serves as a powerful reminder of the hardships faced by refugees—individuals who cross international borders seeking safety and protection—and highlights the urgent need for global solidarity and responsibility-sharing.
The theme for 2025, “Solidarity with Refugees”, calls on the international community to go beyond symbolic gestures and take practical, meaningful steps to support displaced populations. It emphasizes that empathy must be paired with action—through humanitarian aid, inclusive policies, and opportunities for integration, safety, and dignity.
As part of the global observance, UNHCR India (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) organized a commemorative event at the UNESCO headquarters in New Delhi on June 19. The gathering reflected on the plight and perseverance of refugees and underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue and shared responsibility in addressing the growing displacement crisis.
World Refugee Day not only aims to raise awareness but also advocates for access to basic rights like education, healthcare, employment, and freedom of movement for refugees worldwide. The observance continues to play a vital role in fostering global understanding and mobilizing support for those forced to rebuild their lives away from home.
